Paddle Dry Wear
What are some cheap ways to add warmth to my Kayaking gear?
I am paddling often in Winter at the moment, and am looking for cheap ways to add warmth to my kayaking gear. At the moment I wear
Rash Vest, Long Sleeve Wetsuit (4mm), Helmet, Wetsuit Boots, Splash Cag, PFD/ Buoyancy Aid. I do have wetsuit/ neoprene gloves, but I find they restrict my ability to grip the paddle, especially when I am pushing my skills.
I would dearly love to buy a dry cag/ dry suit. What are the best of entry level suits? I am also thinking as a stop-gap until i can afford this, are the neoprene rash vests any good. Also, I really need to find something to keep my hands warm. I’ve seen a lot of people with Pogies- are these any good. Do they restrict rolling the kayak?
Any advice greatly recieved
You might want to try posting your question on the forums at paddling.net and qajaqusa.org. There are a lot of folks on those sites that do winter paddling and I have found them a great resource for tips on gear and techniques. Paddling.net also has good user reviews of items like gloves and dry-suits plus classified ads for used equipment. Have you considered a neoprene tuilik?
Also, the Kayak Academy here in the states sells their rental gear at decent prices, including dry suits:

Their site has good information on outfitting yourself and specific gear for cold weather paddling, too.
Happy (and warm) paddling!
